The 1846 Blodget House was originally built on the site of the Downers Grove Museum. In about 1890 the house was moved to the back of the Blodgett property (now Randall Street) to make way for the Blodgett Family's new Victorian.
Our vision is that after suitable restoration, the house will be used as an educational and cultural center for early Downers Grove history, particularly to illuminate our village's role in the Underground Railroad. There are many steps to be taken, but the most important is for our community to come together to help preserve one of our cultural landmarks.
In early 2008, the Downers Grove Heritage Preservation Corporation acquired the 1846 house and moved it onto the museum property adjacent to the 1890-era victorian museum. The project has been divided into three major phases. Phase One includes moving the structure onto the museum property, and completing exterior restoration. Phase Two addresses interior renovation. Phase Three encompasses exhibits.
In May of 2008, the house was moved onto its new foundation, ready for exterior restoration. In Phase One, the roof line on the east wing will be lowered to its original configuration, and a complete new roof will be installed. Period windows and a Greek Revival front doorway with side and transom windows matching the original doorway will be installed. Two new chimneys will be built, and exterior siding matching the original will be installed.
With your support, we expect to move quickly and with purpose. We invite you to join our effort and help realize this shared vision. You can help by volunteering, through donations, and by simply spreading the word about this important effort.
